SJWD Water District General Information
- SJWD Water District Mission – Provide excellent quality
water and related services to our current and future customers
and lead efforts to protect our water resources while continuously
improving cost effectiveness. We accomplish this through
the collaborative efforts of our employees, outside resources and
agencies employing sound business practices and optimal use of
technology.
- South Carolina General Assembly passed legislation creating the
SJWD Water District, a special purpose district, in 1956. The
legislation established the District’s boundary and provided
the authority to sell bonds.
- District is guided by a five member Commission, appointed by
the Governor of South Carolina.
- SJWD Commission meets the first Tuesday of each month, 12:45pm,
at the SJWD Water District office located at 307 Spartanburg Highway,
Wellford, SC. The public is welcome to attend.
- Service area covers approximately 130 square miles in Western
Spartanburg County.
- District provides water to approximately 20,000 customers, with
a service area population of 46,000 people.
- Middle Tyger River (Lyman Lake), and the North Tyger River (lakes
Cooley and North Tyger Reservoir) are the sources of water for
SJWD customers. Water from these rivers is treated at the
SJWD Filtration Plant on Groce Road in Lyman.
- District acquired the property to develop the Lake Cooley and
North Tyger River Reservoirs in the mid-1960s, anticipating the
need to secure other water sources for a quickly growing region.
- SJWD recently acquired Lake Apalache as an additional resource
for future water supply.
