SJWD 101: The Water Treatment Cycle

July 16, 2026 – At SJWD Water District, every drop of water goes through a carefully designed treatment process to ensure it is safe, reliable, and ready for distribution throughout our community.

The process begins with the source water intake, where raw water from Lyman Lake flows down the Middle Tyger River and is then pumped to SJWD’s filtration plant. Once it arrives, the water goes through screening, where large debris such as sticks, leaves, and litter is removed by mechanical screens.

Next is coagulation, where chemicals called coagulants are added to the water to help tiny particles bind together. This process is followed by flocculation, where the water is gently mixed so that those particles form larger, heavier clumps called floc. The process then moves into sedimentation, allowing the floc to settle to the bottom of the tank, making it easier to remove from the water.

Once the larger particles have been removed, the water then enters the filtration phase. Here, water passes through the tube-like filters to remove any smaller remaining particles. Once filtration is complete, the water is disinfected to kill bacteria, viruses, and other harmful pathogens.

The next step is pH adjustment. During this phase, chemicals may be added to adjust the water’s pH balance and help protect pipes and infrastructure from corrosion. From there, the treated water enters storage in tanks and towers located throughout the community until it is needed.

Finally, during distribution, the treated water travels through underground pipes, delivering safe drinking water to schools, businesses, and homes across our community
